Acupuncture relieves low back pain

Nearly
80 percent of people will suffer from low back pain at some point in
life, and back pain is the number one reason for seeking acupuncture,
according to WebMD. Does acupuncture really relieve chronic back aches?
Yes, according to the 18,000 participants in research pooled from 29
studies and reported in the Archives of Internal Medicine. Overall,
participants reported significant pain relief.
According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative
Medicine, “Acupuncture describes procedures involving the stimulation of
points on the body using a variety of techniques. Most often, skin is
penetrated with thin, solid, metallic needles that are manipulated by
the hands or electrical stimulation. Practiced in China and other Asian
countries for thousands of years, acupuncture is one of the key
component of traditional Chinese medicine.”
Doctors at Ostir Physical Medicine in Joliet explain that acupuncture
needles “stimulate the nervous system to release chemicals in the
muscles, spinal cord, and brain, plus increase blood flow to affected
areas. These chemicals can either change the experience of pain, or
trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones which influence the
body’s own internal regulating systems.
“Improved energy and biochemical balance produced by acupuncture
stimulates the body’s natural healing abilities, and promotes physical
and emotional balance.”
Traditional Chinese acupuncture is based on the theory that energy or
“Qi,” (pronounced “chee”), flows through the body, reaching every
