Chinese Medicine for Macular Degeneration

Chinese Medicine Fix Seen for Eye Disorder

Chinese medicine is proving effective in treating macular degeneration, which leads to deteriorating eyesight, an expert said.
Liu Xin, a visiting scholar in the clinical division of Hong Kong Baptist University's School of Chinese Medicine, said the macula, located at the center of the retina and the most sensitive part of the eye, helps the central vision and to distinguish colors.
Liu said the macula is related to a person's spleen, heart, liver and kidney, so the disease may be triggered by an imbalance in these organs.
He said patients with the disease will have blurred vision due to edema or the bleeding of the macula. They may not be able to distinguish colors, or even be blind.
Since 2011, Liu has clinically observed 74 patients, aged 5 to 87, with macular degeneration. After being treated with Chinese medicine - comprising seaweed, American ginseng, milkvetch root, plantain seed, red sage root and Panax pseudo-ginseng - 56 eyes out of 41 people showed obvious improvement.
A man, surnamed Mak, 37, lost his left eyesight due to macular bleeding in 2001. This year, his right eye started to bleed. After being treated with Chinese medicine, his right eye was saved and he can see things clearly.
Liu said treatment generally lasts three months, with patients requiring to take medicine twice a day.
He said those who are aged over 45 have a 30 percent chance of macular degeneration. The earlier it is treated, the sooner the disease can be cured.
