Cosmetic Acupuncture or Botox

Cosmetic Acupuncture Offers Natural Alternative to Botox

The ancient Chinese practice of acupuncture has been embraced around the world to treat or cure a wide range of health conditions, and it is now being used in cosmeceutical — non-surgical cosmetic — treatments, reports our sister paper China Times.
Acupuncture can be used to smoothen facial traits by harmonizing various meridians on the face, which will increase the production of collagen, stretch wrinkles and tighten facial muscles. The treatment is seen as an natural alternative to western procedures such as face lifts, botox and collagen injections.
Chen Chao-tsung, a traditional Chinese medicine doctor, said that Chinese medicine can contribute in many ways to the cosmetics industry. "Medicine, acupuncture and massage could all be employed to beautify people's faces through milder approaches, different from thread acupuncture employed in the past," he said.
By inserting 50 to 60 needles at a time, acupuncture can help people generate collagen so as to tighten facial skin, whereas it takes five to 10 botox injections to have such an effect, and each only last three months, according to Chen.
Chen said that cosmetic acupuncture helped a female patient in her 40s. The patient's face was asymmetrical, but the collagen regenerated after the non-surgical treatment, and the right side of her face smoothened while the left part tightened, Chen said.
There are 70 to 80 TCM doctors in Taiwan who provide similar medical cosmetic services, according to Chen. He added that a doctor's experience with the procedure is important as they will ensure minimal pain and bleeding following the treatment.
