Acupuncture Soothes in Liver Cancer
Acupuncture lessens depression, anxiety and insomnia in
patients with hepatocellular carcinoma, according to new South Korean research.
The study randomised 24 HCC patients complaining of insomnia
and depression to either acupuncture three times a week for four weeks or usual
care.
Scores for insomnia, depression and anxiety all
significantly decreased in the acupuncture group compared with controls.
Speaking at APASL 2014, study co-author Dr Byung Seok Kim
said the study was of clinical importance as many drug therapies for depression
affected liver function.
However liver function remained the same in patients treated with acupuncture, he said.
But large-scale studies would be needed to confirm the efficacy and safety of the treatment, he added.
