Moxibustion for High Blood Pressure

Moxibustion for High Blood Pressure
Researchers from China Academy of Chinese Medical Science and Beijing University of Traditional Chinese Medsicine performed a systematic review of randomized controlled trials to assess the effectiveness of moxibustion on Yongquan (KI 1) to lower blood pressure compared to high blood pressure drugs.

Moxibustion is a modality in traditional Chinese medicine  that involves the burning of a roll of specially prepared herbs containing Artemisia vulgaris or mugwort directly or indirectly at the acupuncture points. Yongquan (KI 1) is located on the points of 1/3 and 2/3 intersection of plantar. In traditional Chinese medicine theory, Yongquan (KI 1) has the function of opening the orifices, directing qi downward, relieving hiccup, discharging heat, clearing heart heat, and restoring yang to save from collapse.

The systematic review of the randomized controlled trials shows a beneficial effect of using moxibustion interventions on Yongquan (KI 1) to lower blood pressure compared to high blood pressure drugs.
