Not afraid of needles! Kelly Ripa
and Michael Strahan kickstart the New Year with acupuncture treatments on their
talk show
Kelly got treated for 'congestion'
while Michael Strahan lifted his shirt for 'some cupping' to help a sore back.
The amiable co-hosts of Live! With Kelly And Michael were
feeling pretty good by the end of the show on Tuesday thanks to Dr. Daniel Hsu.
Kelly and Michael invited the
world-famous doctor of acupuncture and herbal medicine to give them a sample of
what treatments he performs, and of course the pair couldn't stop chatting
throughout the segment.
No problem with needles: The
44-year-old co-host was treated for 'congestion' and it seemed to be working
judging by her wide-eyed expression
The 44-year-old Ripa was volunteered
first to get treated for what she said was 'congestion,' which involved the placement
of tiny needles at certain 'points' around her face.
Kelly seemed to like it and smiled
towards the camera with green needles sticking out of her cheeks.
Michael, 43, showed off that
athletic build by pulling up his shirt and lying face down on the acupuncture
table.
The adventurous duo - who routinely
get into the spirit with exercise demos and other silly games on the ABC show -
couldn't wait to get started.
'Kickstart the New Year Wellness
Edition with a look at acupuncture which with help alleviate pain, treat a
variety of illnesses, even give you a facelift,' Kelly began by telling the
audience.
'How does acupuncture work?' Kelly
asked the good doctor, adding that her husband Mark Consuelos 'swears by it.'
Dr. Hsu replied: 'It works by
getting your body to create its own natural painkillers and to calm the nervous
system down and that helps with all kinds of diseases.'
'I'm a big proponent. I love
acupuncture,' Michael said.
Kelly, who was dressed in a pretty
red floral frock, was more to the point, asking Dr. Hsu: 'Can you help me?'
Thank you for that: 'I'm leaving my
pants on,' Michael volunteered before situating himself face-down on the
acupuncture table
'Ow!' Michael yelled out as though
it hurt but admitted he was just kidding around
'What kind of pain are you having?'
Michael wanted to know.
'I don't know, but I feel as though
I have congestion... This is really all a ruse because what I really want is
the facelift. Acupuncture facelift. So I'm pretending.'
'You don't need the acupuncture
facelift, you're perfect as is,' Dr. Hsu informed her.
'Good answer,' Kelly happily
replied.
Super
suction cups: Dr. Hsu placed the cups on Michael's lower back and explained
that they were 'pulling up muscles and increasing blood flow, helping with any
kind of pain or muscle stiffness'
'This is just for your congestion,'
the acupuncturist said, 'so I'm going to go one, I'm going to go two, and I'm
going to go three. These are actually very special small facial needles that I'm
using.'
'Unbelievable!' was Kelly's glowing
review.
Then it was Michael's turn to get
the 'cupping' treatment for his sore back, which is understandable after 14
years playing NFL football.
'This is just a guise to get his
shirt off,' Kelly laughingly said, adding: 'Is he taking his pants off?'
'I'm leaving my pants on,' Michael
volunteered before situating himself face-down on the acupuncture table.
Dr. Hsu placed what looked like
large suction cups on the small of Michael's back, saying: 'There we go, one
and two.'
'Ow!' Michael yelled out, feigning
pain, before quickly adding: 'I'm joking.'
'The cups are creating a negative
pressure, so it's pulling up muscles and increasing blood flow, helping with
any kind of pain or muscle stiffness you may have,' revealed Dr. Hsu.
The treatments certainly did the
trick for both Kelly and Michael, who definitely seemed to have that extra pep
to their step.
