Acupuncture Rising:
Four Decades of Progress
Presented by Dr. Changzhen Gong
In the summer of 1971, New York Times journalist James Reston left his appendix behind in
China, but brought the news about acupuncture back to the United States. The
four decades since that famous surgical encounter have seen increased public
awareness and acceptance of acupuncture in the US, as well as an
exponentially-increasing number of scientific studies which use modern research
tools such as clinical trials and fMRI to test the validity of the millennia-old
medical tradition. Unique modern adaptations of acupuncture such as its
application to IVF and macular degeneration have also sprung up. Acupuncture is now a firmly established part of healthcare in the United States. In recognition of Acupuncture
and Oriental Medicine Day in Minnesota, Dr.
Gong will present this enlightening lecture on acupuncture’s rise in the United
States over the last four decades.
