The Disparity of Acupuncture in New York

The Buzz Few Practice Acupuncture in Broome

New York has 4,254 licensed acupuncturists, and fewer than 0.2 percent of those specialists call Broome or Tioga counties their home.

Records maintained by the New York state Department of Education list five practitioners in Broome County and two in Tioga County in 2013.
By comparison, there are 35 clinicians practicing the ancient Chinese medical procedure in nearby Tompkins County.
Seven New York counties have no licensed acupuncturists: Cattaraugus, Genesee, Herkimer, Lewis, Madison Schuyler and Wyoming and four have just one. Tioga is one of eight counties with two, according to state records.
Not surprisingly, most of the state licensed acupuncturists reside in the metro area. The five boroughs host fully one-half of all licensed acupuncturists in the state with 786 practicing in Manhattan and another 729 in Queens.
To receive a license in New York, an acupuncturist must complete a three-year training program and have a minimum of two years college education. The three year training program includes both theory and hand-on clinical practice. To practice acupuncture in New York, professionals must pass a state-approved licensing examination.
