Acupuncture achieves analgesic effects on visceral pain via multiple modes (signal interaction and integration at neurons, ion channels, activation of central descending inhibition pathways, gene regulation, etc.) and recruitments of a variety of biochemicals (opioids, 5-HT, NMDA, etc.).
