Second Group of Grand Masters

30 Experts Awarded Title of TCM Master

The Second Traditional Chinese Medicine Master Awarding Ceremony was held in Beijing on Thursday. Thirty experts, including one who has passed away, won the title of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) master at the ceremony, Shanghai-based news website thepaper.cn reports.
In recent years, scandals and false claims of self-proclaimed TCM masters like Zhang Wuben or Ma Yueling have made many Chinese wary of traditional Chinese medicine and its practice.
Therefore, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security (MOHRSS), the National Health and Family Planning Commission (NHFPC) and the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SATCM) decided to select outstanding TCM masters and hold an awarding ceremony for them to promote authentic Chinese medicine and medical practice.
The first group of 30 TCM masters was awarded with the title in 2009.
According to NHFPC Deputy Director and SATCM Director Wang Guoqiang, there were some differences in this year's awarding ceremony from the first one.
First, the 30 entitled experts came from 22 provinces or cities, eight provinces more than the last one.
Second, their average age is 80, five years younger than that of the first awarding ceremony.
Third, their expertise also covers a broader field.
Also, Professor Liu Minru from Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine became the first female TCM master honored in this kind of ceremony.
